Prepared?

I'm going to hold your hand when I ask this question...Are you prepared to get old?  Do you know how much it will cost for you to retire? Are you aware of the cost of staying in your home or going to a nursing home? There's not a right way to be prepared as it looks different for each person.  In my experience my patients who are "aging well," plan ahead. Granted we don't know what could happen tomorrow, but some of us haven't even planned for the week ahead.

As old-fashioned as it sounds, most healthy older adults are generally prepared and organized.

Speaking with patients I've seen a clear correlation between preparedness and health.  Preparedness can be as simple as planning meals the week ahead, planning bill payments according to income, and knowing what you'll wear tomorrow.

Being organized and prepared can indeed have a significant impact on your health. By planning ahead and staying organized, you can reduce stress and anxiety levels, which are known to have negative effects on physical and mental well-being. Being prepared can help you stick to healthy habits and routines, such as meal planning, exercise scheduling, and regular medical check-ups. When you are organized, you are more likely to prioritize your health and make time for self-care activities. This, in turn, can lead to better overall health outcomes and a higher quality of life. Maintaining a sense of organization and preparedness in your daily life can be a powerful tool in promoting and sustaining good health.

As a pro procrastinator, I've had to be mindful of how unprepared I am. Where in my life can I use some more organization and preparedness? Finances, meal preparation, travel, work? How much stress can be relieved with some planning?
